Secondary Field Experience Reflection

What in particular did you like?

I liked two specific things about my secondary field experience: 1)collaborative teaching and 2)the variety involved

I was able to teach collaborative lessons with the social studies teacher, but I also got to do booktalks with the advanced LA teacher and research with the art teacher. So I was pleased to get to work with different subject areas, especially ones I don't get to work with as a classroom teacher. I also really enjoyed the amount of… Continue

Saying No to Stereotypes

I have to say that reading this article was kind of depressing. It was sad to hear that much of the young adult literature on homosexuality was negative and often ended in death. I can see how this topic would be difficult to deal with because as a teacher, I don't think I even discuss heterosexual relationships with my students. I do realize that as a future librarian, I will need to offer the kinds of books mentioned in the article in my library. But offering them or having them on the shelf… Continue

Comic Book Store Visit

Needless to say, this was an eye-opening experience. I visited the Free Time Comics store in Westminster. At first, I was overwhelmed and clearly out of my element. I had no idea there was so much to comics and graphic novels. I saw many familiar ones, like Batman, Thor, Superman, Star Wars, etc. But there were tons I had never heard of. I asked the saleman which was most popular for middle schoolers and he said the Manga series. Although he said the Iron… Continue

War and Peace

My first response in thinking about the two perspectives of war and peace is to say that they both should be taught in the classroom. In thinking about it more, I wonder if someone's response would differ based on where they are from. It would be interesting to see. I believe that presenting both sides of this topic is appropriate. I completely agree with Brager in that, understanding something such as war should help prevent it. As far as historical fiction novels, I think about ones I've used… Continue

The Game of Life

The topic of sports is interesting to me because as a LA teacher who has more male students than female students, I often look for books that appeal to boys. Ironically, many of the good ones I use deal with a sport of some kind. Although the books I use like Tangerine, have a male protagonist, I usually get good feedback from my female students too. I think everyone can learn from reading sports novels and biographies of famous athletes because sports seem to be a universal theme. I bet… Continue

Adolescent Literacies

While sorting through the information on different literacies, I couldn't help but think about different learning styles. To me, the different literacies we need to teach is like thinking of how to teach to different learning styles. Not all learning styles work with every student just like not all literacies appeal to each student. However, the difficult thing for me as a teacher is that I have to be somewhat knowledgeable in all of them. I found this to be true in the article, "The Shift to… Continue

Reflection on "Controversial Books" Chapter 3 in The Whole School Library Handbook

After looking over some of the books listed in chapter 3, I went to the library at my school. I only found the following books in our middle school library: If You Come Softly, The Moves Make the Man, Danger Zone, The Land, Crossing Jordan, and Burning Up. All of these books were listed under the subheading of "race matters" in the chapter. I think the reason that so few of the books mentioned in chapter 3 are actually offered in our school library is… Continue

Library Blogs

I checked out the following blogs:

1. Library Stuff - www.librarystuff.net

This was the first one I looked at and I have to say, it was pretty confusing. Maybe it's just because I'm really new to this blog thing, but it seemed hard to follow and there was a lot of information to take in that I couldn't sort through it all.

2. The Shifted Librarian - www.theshiftedlibrarian.com

Although this one had humorous photos and names for links, I also thought it was… Continue
