I too like the idea of the in-house coffee shop. I can imagine it would be a great way to raise a little extra money for books. I would think it would be wise to "quarantine" this to a certain section of the library - away from technology and such,…

Long Term/Low Cost: Start a parent book club. It might sound silly, but I think that there are SO many books out there that parents could read - and would be willing to read and discuss - that would benefit the students. I think the challenge with t…

Shelfari can be a web 2.0 tool - I love Shelfari! It can be added to blogger but not wordpress blogs because Shelfari uses javascript which causes security issues. Love to see the books on the shelf! so cute!

Love it! That's a great idea. They can be a human form of the Amazon recommendation tool! I'm going to use that! :)

I forgot to add something to my lesson! I'd like to do an activity where I give the kids a list of someone's "favorite" books and have them make predictions about whether or not that person would enjoy certain books, as well as have students recomme…

I've always wanted to start my own blog of books I've read, and I love using Shelfari.com not only to find books, but to discuss books I liked/didn't like with other readers. To be honest, if I were a reading teacher, I would do the lesson I've desc…

Just like everyone else, I'm not surprised at the situation, nor am I surprised at the actions taken by the principal. I would agree that a better solution would have been to give parents the option of having their student sit out. However, there ar…

Funniest Librarian Blog EVER.

Ok, I’ve been thinking about this whole blog posting thing for three days now. I found a blog that I thought was funny on Sunday. But I’m not so sure I should comment on it. But I’m going to go out on a limb, because after thinking about it a lot, I realize that it’s something we’re going to have to deal with at some point during our career, so here goes.

Maybe it isn’t actually the funniest blog ever, but it made me belly laugh like I’ve never belly laughed about anything library related befor… Continue

Virtual Learning Commons

To be honest, before I could start looking for a "good" virtual learning commons, I had to figure out what the heck one was! So, being the book lover that I am, I started reading. In theory, the idea sounds good, and I'm sure, as I get more used to them, I'll like them, but I have - through this whole process - figured out that I am a tangable kind of girl. I really REALLY like things. I’m a fan of actual books, paper, pens, stuffed animals – all of it. So finding a virtual learning commons that… Continue

Nervous Novice...

Ok, so I'm going to be honest - I'm pretty nervous about this whole graduate degree, "being an adult" thing. Yes, I'm 31 and am starting my 10th year of teaching, but come on...this is scary! Going back to school is not easy. And now I'm going back to school online - where I can't see the reactions of my fellow students. I'm very much a face-to-face person, and I like to think I can be kind of funny, but who knows with online classes. I'm probably going to end up being "that lady" who makes the… Continue

Well, I didn't think about the fact that you would probably be here from Thursday through Saturday and I will be in Silver City, NM on those exact days! I was hoping you would come earlier or stay later, but I now realize everyone will be traveling on those same days. Anyway, I will give you a call if I come back early on Saturday, but its a 5 hour drive and I'm not sure what time we'll head back yet. I was looking forward to actually meeting you since I am sure we will be in "class" again, maybe another time?
