Wow, so many awesome ideas! One of my favorites was from Rae. The Birthday Book Club is a much better alternative to what my school once did. Kids could come into the principal's office on their birthday and select a book to keep. This was expensive…

Long Term/Low Cost Our Mountain BOCES just sent out a letter a few months ago to let us know of the thousands of items they have available in their own library collection. Since our 4th graders are currently studying "heroes" and each student has se…

For my lesson plan, I am asking 4th grade students to use wordle.net to describe their selected historical hero as part of the 4th Grade Heroes PYP planner unit. This lesson is incorporated after the students have done their hero research, and befor…

I'm not surprised either. Although I realize the author's visit was far more controversial, I'm happy to report that the Summit School District encouraged all schools to air President Obama's speech a few weeks ago. Parents were notified ahead of ti…

So true! I spent three years teaching in Vail-same issues! (ok-that was 1970!)

I thought the article was very interesting. At our start-of-the-year district-wide teacher and staff meeting, we spent about an hour focusing on how the cultural experiences of each of us make us unique, and it is really impossible to attempt to gro…

Hi Shelly, I too am elementary. Thank you for posting the Elementary School Learning Commons. It is nice to have resources like this to turn to. I have noticed that our instructor, Liz, has already modeled for us many of the same collaborative tools…

Yes, I should have added this ning site to the list too -- I've learned more from the discussions on this ning than I have from the blogs that I listed. I also must fess up to spending way too much time on this assignment -- it was totally overwhelm…

Two great resources-I think as we are inundated with information, it is important to find one, two, maybe three blogs that we follow because they are in line with OUR needs. I wonder what Dianne's experience is-sometimes there is an "About Me" secti…

Great paper! It had lots of info similar to the article I chose, but was more in-depth, and included a more recent history. I always start thinking about the glamorous "old days" when there weren't as many people and so many modern advances were bei…

Profile Information

About Me:
I am going back to school AND work after taking more than a decade "off" to stay at home with my three kids. I have a BA from WSC in English/Business, a MA in Instruction and Curriculum, and an expired secondary teaching license (oops). I plan to revive the teaching license during my coursework in the library media program.
Hobbies
I live in Summit County where we have nine months of winter, two months of summer, and (at least) one month of mud, so winter sports keep me happy. I *love* to ski and my ski area of choice is A-Basin. I enjoy cross-country skiing, hiking, and mountain biking, as well. I am an avid knitter, and I am the leader of the 4-H Knitting Club up here. I enjoy reading fiction, magazines, how-to's, etc. but I find myself reading more adolescent literature these days as I try to keep up with what my two girls (ages 10 and 9) are reading for fun.
Current position and employment location
I worked a few hours a week in the office at Summit Cove Elementary last year, but I will start a new position next week as the Media Para-professional there. Summit Cove is located about five miles south of Dillon and two miles west of Keystone. I will be working Tuesdays through Fridays. I'm excited to be working in the same school that all three of my kids are currently attending!
Favorite Book:
Oooh, that's hard! There are so many, but how about *Into Thin Air* by Jon Krakauer
Favorite Library:
College Hill Library in Westminster. It has a wonderful children's program.

What professional development topics are you interested in learning more about?
I want to learn more about all aspects of library management and how to improve our elementary library. I need to learn more about the use of technology in the library media center, and I am especially excited to learn more about how to motivate kids to use the library to its fullest potential in their quest to learn.

Poverty: A Diversity Issue

The Summit School District is currently one of a handful of districts in the state of Colorado receiving funds to help "close the achievement gap." As a resort community with very wealthy families as well as struggling working families, we see a significant gap between the "haves" and "have nots" up here. Therefore, I found the following article to be of interest to me:

Burney, V.H. and Beilke, J.R. (2008). The constraints of poverty on high achievement. Journal for the Education of the… Continue

Two "Favorite" Learning Commons

I spent way too much time trying to find two learning commons sites for elementary schools! Although I didn't find anything that is actually a learning commons in full gear, I did find two interesting sites:

Herricks Virtual Library Media Center at http://sites.google.com/site/herricksvlmc
I love the graphic design of this elementary school virtual library out of New Hyde Park in New York -- it's very fun and I'm sure the s… Continue

Two of My Favorite Library Blogs

I chose two blogs that I felt would especially help me in my position as a media para/teacher in an elementary school library. The first blog is Kids Lit (http://kidslit.menashalibrary.org). This blog is hosted by Tasha Saeker, who is the director of the Menasha Public Library in Menasha, Wisconsin. Her blog focuses on books for kids of all ages, but I am especially interested in her categories on authors, awards, chapter books, eas… Continue
