Both of these ways find their genesis in one idea, and are very specific to my situation. But, I found it useful to think of ways to exploit a "local celebrity." Short Term/Low Cost: In Summit County, we have a local woman (Shannon Galpin) who, aft…

I created a lesson in conjunction with a freshman civics teacher. The kids were each assigned an amendment from the Bill of Rights which they needed to research and then teach their classmates. They were able to use books and encyclopedias, online d…

I know that I am putting my two cents in towards the end of the week, so forgive any repetitive thoughts on this... I, like so many of you, am not surprised about the principal's decision to cancel the author visitation. I have been spending a lot…

After reading the article, how do you think that you can incorporate 'flexibility' and 'understanding humans' into your classroom? :o)

One of the Virtual Learning Commons that I found when I searched was based in the Grossmont Union High School District. I was drawn to this wiki because it was created for a secondary school which will be most applicable for my situation. When I sta…

I love the English Companion ning. It is way cool. I taught English for eight years, and I really wish I would have known about this before. Thanks! I added it to my delicous bookmarks, and I know I will use it soon.

Love them both-I just Facebooked the English Companion one to one of my favorite English teachers at Columbine-thanks!

I know it may seem like an obvious choice, but I do really like the Library 2.0 Ning.. It is exactly the same set up as our 21st Librarian Ning and because of that is easy to navigate. The blogs are useful and you can access them without being a mem…

Hi Leah, Thank you for posting this article in the discussion forum. When I mention that I have started the education to obtain my Master of Arts in School Library and Instructional Leadership I get a LOT of negative feedback. From librarians telli…

I bet Dewey was a total geek! My kind of guy... The article was interesting for sure... I couldn't help thinking about Dewey in comparison to Ben Franklin (another interesting eccentric). They both set personal goals for themselves, sought to be an…

I read "A Post Election Perspective: Whither Information Policy? Part Two" which is an article which examines how the library "acts as a point of mediation between the creators and users of knowledge" (Shuler, 2005, p.65). Through this lens, it exam…

Welcome to the group. I hope you are loving Summit County.

Profile Information

About Me:
I just relocated to Breckenridge from Castle Rock. I grew up in Colorado and love this beautiful state! I have been teaching high school English and Social Studies for six years and am excited to become a librarian! I am the youngest of three and the only (spoiled) girl in the family. I am an aunt to two and mother to none (unless you count my cats):)
Hobbies
I love to be outside, so hiking, gardening, sitting in the sun, are all hobbies of mine. I also am crazy about crossword puzzles and Jeopardy :) I would love to say that as an English teacher and librarian that I love to read, but rarely do I have the time to read books that I choose; recently, all of my reading has been for school! I love to travel locally (I spend a lot of time traveling around Colorado and Utah) but have big dreams of traveling to far away places.
Current position and employment location
Media Specialist/English Teacher - Summit High School, Breckenridge, CO (new position for me!)
Favorite Book:
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
What professional development topics are you interested in learning more about?
I am a sponge for information right now. I am interested in anything tech that will help students and teachers do their jobs better.

Virtual Learning Commons

One of the Virtual Learning Commons that I found when I searched was based in the Grossmont Union High School District. I was drawn to this wiki because it was created for a secondary school which will be most applicable for my situation. When I started looking around the VLC, I was disappointed that it was underdeveloped in some areas and hadn't been updated for a couple of months. This could be because of the summer break… Continue

My Favorite Nings/Blogs

I know it may seem like an obvious choice, but I do really like the Library 2.0 Ning.. It is exactly the same set up as our 21st Librarian Ning and because of that is easy to navigate. The blogs are useful and you can access them without being a member of the Ning. It also serves an international community (I have noted spellings like "favourite" and can see pictures of professors in full Arabian garb!) which is great for building relation… Continue

Post #1 - My Thoughts (and fears) on Being a Web Junkie

I consider myself a skeptic when it comes to the use of technology. I have witnessed thousands of dollars spent on technology for technology's sake in my district while the ceiling tiles drip with rain water. I have seen two teenagers walk next to one another in the hallway, at the lunch table, at the mall, while feverishly texting third parties. I have seen them ask one another, "did you get my text?" The other replies, "yes, but I didn't read it." The other says, "you should read it; it's funn… Continue
