I am not surprised that there are parents who believe that keeping their kids in the dark is the best way to "protect" them. Clearly, the material in Ms.Hopkins books deals with a sensitive matter, but I believe it would send a powerful message to k…

Gender roles are definitely different in my family too. Currently, my husband is 'Mr. Mom', going to school fulltime and working on the weekends, while I am working full-time. I am glad that my children have the chance to have a special relationship…

I'm a Change Agent myself so I try to educate people when it directly relates to me but otherwise I just move along since I don't like conflict. I've got enough going on in my life right now and have become a bit more selfish with first asking mysel…

Hi...I think it is fair to say that all of us make assumptions about people on some level. Speaking for myself...a couple of examples of assumptions I make (and have to try not to!)...I see two youngish guys in suits riding bikes and automatically t…

Hi Katie, I can relate to your European experiences of waiting your turn or shoving! I could spend eternity politely waiting my turn! And I cringe when I see the "ugly American." I'm not sure what assumptions you make about people? And to whom are…

This article served as a good reminder of the importance of cultural competence in the field of education. I have spent my career (10 years so far) working with culturally diverse populations. I still have to watch myself to avoid making assumptions…

Hi!! I could use help with google docs as well. Dede, would you mind if I emailed you mine, or I could just post it here. Do you (or does anyone else) have info about a google docs tutorial?? It looks pretty straightforward by I am having a heck of…

Hi Susan, the Accidently Curious blog is a good read. The spider part made my skin crawl... Wonder what happened after 2008?

Hi Janine, love the idea of Boys Blogging Books!! Great way to encourage boys to read and to integrate reading with technology. After checking out some of their recommendations, I've got a lot of reading to do!

Palo Alto's idea is great and we can use it in our school libraries-obviously the librarian who was heading this project left and no one picked up the ball-lat's remember that! How cool that kids can be published!

Library wiki and blog

Palo Alto City Library’s book review wiki
www.paclbooks.pbworks.com
I liked this wiki because it features book reviews by children, teens and librarians. Everyone has a chance to share their opinions! I found several titles to add to my list of books to read. There weren’t any new entries as of the end of December 2008, so I’m not sure if this wiki is still in use or not.

Virtual Learning Commons websites

Elementary School Learning Commons
www.elementaryschoollearningcommons.pbworks.com
From what I could gather, this learning commons is a work in progress is a place where aspiring librarians contribute their ideas. As you can see from the URL, it is part of PBWorks, the wiki we joined to discuss our class text. There is a lot of great information on this site! The way it is set up is how one might set up their own virtual learning commons at an elementary school. I definitely plan to reference th… Continue
