Lesson Plan with Web 2.0 Tool Toondoo

My lesson plan is aimed at second grade, though could be amended slightly for other grades. The subject is science, as well as language arts.First the students explore unpopped and popped popcorn in the class, learning about liguid, gas, and solid and how heat can change the state of matter. Then, the librarian reads about popcorn to them and they create their own comic strip, using www.toondoo.com, that will show why popcorn pops.See More

Culturally Responsive Instruction for Teacher-Librarians

I found a great article that discusses exactly what we are considering this week...how school librarians can be culturally responsive! Here are three questions to consider when reading this article.1. Why should teacher-librarians be culturally responsive?2. What are the benefits of having students work together to find information in the library?3. How can the teacher-librarian help students from varying cultures feel more comfortable answering questions?Mestre, L. Culturally Responsive…See More

Understanding culture article

This article was informative and important to read, even if you feel that you are already culturally responsive. As the article states, it "is not something you master once and then forget; it is not about changing others to be more like you. It is about cultivating an open attitude and acquiring new skills, and it involves exploring and honoring your own culture while learning about and honoring other people's cultures" (S. Zion and E. Kozleski, October 2005). I thought that it was really…See More

Another Elementary Virtual Learning Commons

When I first started looking for Virtual learning Commons Online, most of what I found was for universities. Of course that is great, but my goal is to be an Elementary School Librarian and I wondered how I could use this idea for little kids. How could they benefit from these ideas?

Well, with another great online Elementary Learning Commons, it is obvious that kids can benefit in all aspects of their lives! This site has a place to ask the librarian questions, a place to leave… Continue

Elementary school learning commons

This learning commons site is really great. I love that it is geared towards elementary schools, but has some of the important client-based traits that we have been reading about. The bright colors and the fun pictures appeal to kids and encourage them to explore the site. The constant availability of information is vital to being client-based. If you click around the Find section, you will find links to sites that will help with homework, good kid-friendly search engines, and sites to teach… Continue

Another good blog

This is a helpful blog for any of us that may be looking for libarian positions in the future, as it occassionally has job openings listed. It is also helpful for any librarian, or soon to be librarian, looking for more classes, a conference, forum, award, or a scholarship. I love the vast amount of information it includes for anyone in the librarian field. If you are looking to help your career out, this is a great blog to follow! I also like the categories on the side and links to other… Continue

Favorite library blog

I never considered the possibility of library blogs before. I do not work in the library yet, and as a patron it just never occurred to me that there are blogs about libraries. So I was in for a big surprise when I discovered just how many there are out there! Wow.

I discovered one written by a librarian at the National University of Singapore Libraries. Interesting, I thought. Then I read the description he wrote about it, "Keeping track of interesting and cool ideas that might be… Continue

What class are you taking next semester? I'm taking information literacy and Reference...should be interesting.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and I'll definitely let you know when I'm back in town.

Hey there Jordan!

Funny that you responded to my question on the Collection Development page, because I was thinking about you today. I'm headed down to NM for Thanksgiving next week. Don't know if you have plans, but if you have time, I'd love to maybe meet for coffee just so I could meet someone face to face!

Let me know if you're interested. No worries if you're too busy with family stuff!

Thanks Jordan, I did leave the answers to the questions on the schoollearningcommons site where it indicated that the questions could be answered on the right hand column links and then posted my findings on blogs, nings etc on the blog page for our group ning, so I think I did it right. I was just wondering if we needed to start our own page on the schoollearningcommons site. Hope not, because I do not have a clue.
Thanks so much for answering. I was a bit tired yesterday. Spending all day on the computer is not my favorite thing. Hope you have a wonderful week.

Hello, Jordan. Welcome to our community! I lived in Albuq for 6 years eons ago (5th - 11th grades). My sister and her family are there. It's a fine city ... except for the dust storms.

I'm looking forward to sharing library stories with you. My niece teaches in an elementary in Albuq. I don't think they have a librarian in her school....

Thanks, Jordan, for the kind comment about the video. I was happy to get it over with, and that "nodding" was my daughter Molly, who made me laugh at the end of it.
