Secondary Field Experience

I really enjoyed my field experience at Ponderosa H.S. in Douglas County. I was a bit apprehensive about working with high school, since I have been in elementary for the past ten years, but it turned out to be a great experience! Ponderosa's library is a "Developing Power Library". While I was at Ponderosa the librarian was finishing the paperwork necessary to become a "High Performance Power Library". It was a great experience to learn about the process of becoming a Power Library. I also…See More

Books related to race and homosexuality

Being that I teach in Jefferson County, a large and diverse district in Colorado, I was somewhat surprised by the books that our libraries have to offer in relation to race and homosexuality. Of the books listed in Chapter 3, of The Whole School Library Handbook by Woolls and Loertscher (2005), there are only eight books about race offered for elementary students and only a few elementary schools carry these books. This was quite interesting to me, since I teach in elementary school. My… Continue

library-related blogs

There are many library-related blogs out there. I checked out many of them. There are so many, that it can be a bit overwhelming, to say the least! One that I saw is written by Jenny Levine, Shifted Librarian at www.theshiftedlibrarian.com. One of her posts was on whether or not gaming promoted reading. This is an interesting topic. Some middle school librarians were saying that providing gaming in the library got students in the door and then they would end up checking out books too. I… Continue
