Week 3 Discussion: Building Community

Su Eckhardt was impressed with the great ideas and conversations that were generated in this discussion. She asked for a volunteer to copy and post it on the Ning so we wouldn't lose it when the class shell closes. See the attachment for the whole discussion. If there is anything on this document that you wrote which you would like changed or removed, please let Professor Eckhardt know since she is the master of this Ning. Congratulations on finishing a challenging and highly valuable course. I…See More

Profile Information

About Me:
I have taught middle school Language Arts for 14 years in both the Adams 50 and St. Vrain Valley school districts. This year, I won the lottery! Okay, it feels like winning the lottery. I was hired as a TEACHER-LIBRARIAN, midyear, at Fireside Elementary in BVSD. It's the most wonderful school and I'm blissfully happy here!!!

I am an avid reader and can most often be found reading science fiction/fantasy and/or young adult literature. I have long dreamed of becoming a librarian and am delighted to begin this journey. If had the choice between going without reading for a month or going without chocolate for a year, I'd give up chocolate in a heartbeat (and I'm VERY fond of chocolate).
Hobbies
Reading, writing my novel, spending time with friends and family, playing board games, Facebook, cooking, interior design, golf, travel, reading to the visually impaired.
Current position and employment location
Teacher-Librarian at Fireside Elementary in Boulder Valley School District
Favorite Book:
The Belgariad and Malorean Series by David Eddings (13 books)
Favorite Library:
Longs Peak Middle School Library
What professional development topics are you interested in learning more about?
High-interest children's literature collection development, incentive reading programs such as Accelerated Reader, integrating technology in cross-curricular library lessons, cooperative learning connections with classroom teachers, school leadership, etc.

Digital Learning Commons: http://www.learningcommons.org/students/library/sirs.php

I like this learning commons because it not only contains a wealth of reference material, but also a great deal of information about College and Career Planning. I think this is often ignored until a student reaches the final semester of his/her senior year and because not a great deal of thought has gone into preparing the student for a real future, the student may find him/herself at a complete loss. I… Continue

Graduate School and Becoming a Librarian

I love books. Always have, since my earliest memories. I was the kid who came to school groggy with dark circles under my eyes because I simply could not find a good stopping point in a book and would read all night long (still do on occasion, though I've got more self-control now).

I also love kids. Wherever I went, I used to round up all of the younger children, even when I was one, and I'd organize games and activites, just for fun. I still remember being at the local indoor… Continue

Dede,

Thanks so much for your offer for help and I will take you up on it next time. I stayed up late (for me :)) last night and got it to go on, not perfectly but acceptably, at least to me. I so appreciate your support. Hope you have a great week end, at least what is left of it.

My picture is from the wedding. I found that I didn't have very many pictures of just myself (before getting married!), so this seemed like a good one to use. Thanks for the compliment!

It is nice to see a familiar face in this class. I hope this semester is a little bit calmer for you. ;-)
