Profile Information

About Me:
I've been teaching for about 15 years but took this last year off to have a baby and complete my Master's! I'm planning to go back to work in the fall and hope to find a teacher librarian position.
One of my most amazing teaching and life experiences was a two-year stint in Quito, Ecuador, about 9 years ago. I worked on my Spanish, taught literature and writing to Ecuadorian students, and did tons of traveling, hiking, backpacking, mountaineering, salsa dancing, etc!
Since moving back to Colorado, life has been equally busy and interesting, but perhaps not quite as exotic.
Hobbies
I love to be outdoors, hike, ski, bike, read, watch movies, and spend time with my husband Paul, my son Aidan and my wonderful friends.
Current position and employment location
Lanuage Arts and Spanish teacher at Centennial Middle School, Boulder, CO
Favorite Book:
To Kill a Mockingbird is probably my favorite, although this is always a really hard question for me.
Favorite Library:
Boulder Public Library... but I've never met a library I didn't like.
What professional development topics are you interested in learning more about?
I want to continue improving my skills in the area of technology. I am fascinated with but a little intimidated by all there is to learn!

Life as a 21st century teacher librarian!

We're nearing the end of the class, and I'm amazed at how much I've learned. It's incredible how much there is out there, available to us, to use in our libraries and classrooms. There is so much more to explore, figure out, contemplate, etc., but I realize this course has just been an introduction to all the possibilities -- good and bad -- connected to social networks and networking.

The cyber bullying stories and videos from this week were INCREDIBLY sad, touching, scary, eye-opening… Continue

Will I ever figure all this out?!

I've decided that what I need is a one-on-one class where I can sit down with an instructor to walk me through every single one of these new technologies we're learning, give me time to play around with them and write down directions, and then give me a pat on the back at the end of each session! Does anything like this exist?! And could I afford it?!

But I still AM enjoying the class and feel as though I'm learning a lot. Like many of my classmates have said, I feel as though I need to… Continue

Halfway through and loving it!

To prove how new I am to all of this, I just wrote a LONG blog about 10 minutes ago and accidentally posted it to my comments instead of my blog! What a bummer! I guess that's one more lesson learned.

So this posting will be shorter, and hopefully more to the point...

We're halfway through the class, and I'm loving it! I've learned so much that it's truly amazing. I feel like all of this is so relevant, and what I've been wanting to learn since entering the master's program. I… Continue

I think my brain is fried!

Wow! Where to start? This might be somewhat stream of consciousness. I feel as though this class has REALLY stretched me so far! I realize that's good, but it's also exhausting! Some of the classes I've taken in this program have been helpful, and others less so. Because this one is focused so much on technology, I feel it's VERY useful for me. There's so much I need to learn. And I do feel as though I'm learning!

I think I've got the RSS thing figured out somewhat, although I'm still… Continue

Roselle Public Library Book Club

After doing the required reading for the week, one item in Chapter 3 in Farkas about blogs really stands out to me. (Actually, I learned A LOT in these chapters and, more importantly, also realized how much more there is to learn!) I was fascinated by Roselle Public Library's book club blog created for kids. What a neat way to get kids engaged in reading. I'm lucky in that most of the students I work with like to read, but there are plenty who don't. And MOST kids love to play around on the… Continue

Hi Charlotte,
Yep, I do know Chris Meyers - he's great. Sooner or later, we'll meet, just like you said. I just got back from an early morning hike up at Chautauqua and now I'm going to spend a lot of time doing course work. Hope you have a good day,
Barb

Charlotte,

The wiki isn't particularly hard it's sort of like a word processor. Adding a picture is easy if it is already on your computer hard drive. Click on the little rectangle with blue and green in it, then follow directions. It's there when you add a blog.

Hey Charlotte,
This is Barb Miller responding back to you. That's funny that you work at Centennial. My son, Luke Miller was a 7th grader at Centennial this past year, and will be there next year too. What do you teach? Maybe we have met... We also live about 3 blocks away from Centennial (on Orchard Avenue). Anyway, I know a lot of teachers there, including Lisa Sobieniak. I job-share the librarian job at Manhattan. My partner is Jan Snooks. Do you know Jan? She taught Special Ed. for years at Mapleton, then became a librarian at Base Line and then moved to Manhattan when the two schools merged. Small world, eh?

Hey, Charlotte, You will neet to go to edit and create a photo album. Once you’ve create the album, you can use the “View Slideshow” link on the album detail page to see your slideshow. If I can do it ... anyone can! BTW, I think on the Ning home page there is some kind of Help with directions for almost anything. Enjoy!

Charlotte, Above the blog is a little frame with a blue and green design in it, click on it and it will tell you how to download a picture (if you have it on your hard drive). You can use the browse function for that. As for and OTA, it stands for Occupational Therapy Assistant, I have a 2nd bachelors in Occupational Therapy so I'm really a Registered OT, but there was an open position for an Assistant in the district so I took it, that means I don't have to do evaluations and attend Individualized Education Program meetings for students at the school. It also means I get paid as a classified not certified employee. Most of my tech experience is with assistive technology for Special Ed students and about 10 years in the health insurance industry. One of the ways I've learned to use tech is learning from someone who knows something I don't and just playing with the program until I get it right. I've made lots of mistakes along the way.

Hey Charlotte,
I share your concern about these Nings, blogs, social bookmarks, etc. becoming a black hole that sucks in all my time. I know the RSS aggregator is supposed to consolidate, but even that takes up quite a bit of time.

No, I don't think the picture is supposed to be stretched out and I am not sure how to fix it. I am learning all new things to! Congratulations on the new baby. When is it due?

Hi Charlotte - Good to hear from you. I am in my last class, Leadership. I am the new librarian at Falcon Bluffs Middle in Jeffco for next year. As a matter of fact, I'm going over there in just a few minutes for my first real look at the library and to talk to the retiring librarian. I'm VERY excited! It is so close to my house and I really wanted middle school so I think it will be perfect for me. Talk to you later! ~Toni
