In this unit, students will learn about persuasion in advertising, then begin creating their own persuasive book trailer, one that will get their audience to read the book. First, they'll map it out on paper, then turn that plan into a comic strip u…

The library in my school has a simple policy for young adult books - have your parents sign a form and you can read whatever you want in a library. My classroom library has a different policy - if it's something you're actually interested in reading…

This article brought up a lot of thinking I did after a Ruby Payne workshop a few years ago. Most of the staff development forced upon the teachers in my district is useless. This one actually made me sit up and listen - and take notes. If you haven…

The Library With The Lead Pipe is one interesting site. The comments are so insightful and the topics often unusual. Stacey - I'm right there with you on the tech issues. I'm struggling like nobody's business with all this new stuff! (:

How great to have this be the first posted article I read. My memories of the Dewey Decimal System still make me smile – the school library – with all its long, thin windows, and even more, the real city library. You walked in to rows and rows of th…

Great video! You seem to be doing just fine with all the technology involved so far. I can't believe you don't have a cell phone though...is that even possible? ;- )

Wonderful! If you can teach middle school, you can do anything! Your video is great! We all learn by doing-I don't know what you teach, but now maybe your students can be reporters and create a podcast of their work like you did. Goal 1) Begin incor…

I must admit that your comment about nyeducator.com being simply a collection of witty comments by a NYC teacher is what made me want to read it. When I visited the site, I found what I expected: that all educators have a sense of "right" and "wrong" and despite geography, we all have gripes about how the higher ups are running things and how we all think we could do it better, although rarely are any of us able to take on the "machine." But besides nodding in agreement with the first few blogs, what really spoke to me was one that I found entitled "Teaching with Fire." In it, one teacher recalled an inspiring professor who was so sincere, that she when began teaching she thought he must have had a screw loose to be so thoughtful and inspiring. When she shared some of his work with her students, they were dumbstruck. I found this blog to be the embodiment of what we do: despite the pressure and, sometimes idiocy, of the bureaucracy, the one thing that connects us all as educators seems to be the very basic elements of humanity. We want to see a child smile, we want to see people feel connected, and we want to be the ones to make it happen!
