Pages of the Past: Newspapers and Media Literacy
Participants are required to have completed an Essentials Exploration introductory workshop to attend.
Discover the power of primary sources from historic newspapers to explore the concept of media literacy in this 8 hour TPS workshop. Join us and explore classroom activities using news articles, political cartoons, and advertisements. We will focus on two newspaper collections, the Library of Congress’s Chronicling America and the Colorado Historic Newspaper Collection, and investigate ways to use these pages from history to promote student media literacy, a critical 21st century skill. Plus we will focus on leveraging Web 2.0 tools to promote citizen journalism among students. Lunch will be provided. UNC college credit can be earned.
Please share this information with fellow educators and administrators. These workshops are funded by the Library of Congress and are available to all Colorado educators.
If you have a large group interested in attending a workshop, let us come to you. Contact Kim Paxton at 970-351-1555 or primary.sources@unco.edu to schedule a workshop at your school or district. Be sure to ask how you can earn technology tools like flash drives and color printers for your school.
To register for one of the workshops listed above, contact us at primary.sources@unco.edu or 970-351-1555.
